Jane Eyre Movie Reviews
Jane
Eyre has been filmed many times — 22, according to IMDB.com. Some were
made-for-TV versions; others, standard motion pictures. Each one has unique strengths and
weaknesses.
Seeing the 2011 Jane Eyre film
inspired me to view many earlier ones and compose a set of Jane Eyre movie reviews, to compare their
relative successes (and failures) in bringing Bronte's vision to the screen.
I prefer movies that stay close to the letter and
spirit of Charlotte Bronte's book — that deftly present the tale's primary aspects, and a fair number of secondary
ones, without inventing ill-advised new scenes. However, fidelity to the author's vision is not my only basis for
rating films; for instance, I enjoyed the Lord of the Rings movie
trilogy immensely, despite some regrettable story alterations. Acting skill, believability of sets and costumes,
and consistency of story line all contribute to the impressions I record here.
